The degree project
The goals for the degree project work at ICT are as follows:
The student should:
- be able to apply the relevant knowledge and skills, which are acquired within the technical/main area, to a given problem
- within given constraints, even with limited information, be able to independently analyze and discuss complex inquiries/problems and handle larger problems on the advanced level within the technical/main area
- be able to reflect on, evaluate, and critically assess one's own and others' scientific results
- be able to document and present one's own work, for a given target group, with strict requirements on structure, format, and language usage
- be able to identify one's need for further knowledge and continuously develop one's own competencies
Theses projects are examined based on three assessment criteria:
Process
The process is how your work during the project, how well can you plan and how well can you adopt knowledge and ideas. The evaluation criteria are as follows:
- Excellent: Independently plan and carry out the project within agreed time frames, show good initiative and be open to supervision and critique. Independently identify one's own need for new knowledge and acquire this knowledge. Show a good ability to adopt the perspective of another’s work and formulate relevant and constructive critique.
- Good: Plan and carry out the degree work within agreed time frames, show initiative and be open to supervision and critique. Show the ability to acquire new knowledge. Show the ability to adopt the perspective of another’s work and formulate relevant critique.
- Sufficient: Carry out the project work within agreed time frames, show certain initiative and be open to supervision and critique. Show a sufficient ability to acquire new knowledge. Show a sufficient ability to adopt the perspective of another’s work and formulate critique
Note that "within agreed time frames" is a criteria for all levels of assessment.
Engineering-related and Scientific Content
The content part is what you have actually done. Have you been able to do a problem formulation, choose a methodology and do an evaluation? The evaluation criteria are as follows:
- Excellent: From problems/inquiries and methodology, show a very good ability to apply engineering-related and scientific skills like problem formulation, modelling, analysis, development and evaluation in a systematic way.
- Good: From problems/inquiries and methodology, show a good ability to apply engineering-related and scientific skills like problem formulation, modelling, analysis, development and evaluation in a systematic way.
- Sufficient: From problems/inquiries and methodology, show a sufficient ability to apply engineering-related and scientific skills like modelling, analysis, development, and evaluation.
The highest assessment thus requires a very good ability to apply engineering-related and scientific skills. To meet these requirements you would have to, not only implement a complex a system but perform a scientific study and an evaluation to answer a non trivial question.
In the evaluation of the content the KTH guidelines also mandate that students should "where this is relevant, show awareness of societal and ethical aspects, including economically, socially, and ecologically sustainable development".
Presentation
The presentation part is both your written thesis and oral presentation. The evaluation criteria are as follows:
- Excellent: Show a well disposed report, with clear accounts of the project and the results, clear analysis, and well founded argumentation, as well as good language usage, format and scientific accuracy. Show a good ability to orally present with clear argumentation and analysis, and also a good ability to discuss the work.
- Good: Show a well disposed report, with clear accounts of the project and the results, analysis and argumentation, as well as good language usage and format. Show a good ability to orally present and discuss the project.
- Sufficient: Show a written report with acceptable structure, format and language usage. Show the ability to orally present the report.
Note that for the higher assessments you need to present a well disposed report that describes the projects and its results. For the highest assessment the focus is on analysis and argumentation in both the written report and oral presentation.
Grading
At the school of ICT the grading of the project work is based on the three assessment criteria as follows. Each criteria is given a grade from 1 to 3, where 3 is excellent. All three criterion must be meet in order to pass the degree project. The sum of the three grades will then give you your final grade based on the following table.
| Points | 8-9 | 7 | 6 | 5 | 3-4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade | A | B | C | D | E |
The examiner may, after an overall impression, lower or raise the grade from this table one step.
It follows from this that the grade A is only given to a project where two out of three criteria are excellent. A very good project will give you a B and an good project will give you a C. If one criteria or more is only sufficient, the grade is D or E.
The report
When you're almost done, you will get an official thesis number. Then prepare the cover page (Word, OpenOffice). The cover page will be copied on a proper front cover to your thesis so you should also have your own front page with title etc.
