Important Trends: WWW access
- Netsurfing + {Mosaic, Netscape, Harmony, ... } browsers
explosion in WWW servers
Perhaps this is
the "killer application" for the network:
- AT&T predicts that WWW traffic will exceed the total of voice+FAX
- IP traffic between US and Sweden is already ~10 times the total voice+FAX traffic!
- Nokia 9000 has a built-in WWW browser, General Magic is demoing a browser, ...
- brings web browsing to the mobile user
- Lots of print, TV, and radio advertising features the URL of the company
- the information you want (when your on the move) is likely to be available via the web
- Lawyers fighting over who "owns" what domain name
- there is "gold in them there hills" [i.e., recognition of value]
- Web advertising is expected to be a $5B/yr business by 2000 (already expect
to be $312M/1996)[8]
- predicted installed base of 300 million or more browsers within 5 years[9]
