Expectations + Change in ownership of infrastructure
Portable radios and televisions [e.g., SONY Walkman/Watchman/...], pagers,
cordless and cellular phones, have made users accustom to
mobile communications - increasingly these systems support
personal communications {i.e., every user
has his or her own and takes it
where ever they go}.
Cordless phones, LANs, and PBXs have encouraged users to own their own
local infrastructure
rather than renting it (directly or
indirectly) from someone else.
However, more and more local infrastructures will be remotely managed?
- Prediction: Here is a great business opportunity:
- BBN, Digital (aka DEC), HP, and GE have already started such businesses
- Prediction: with outsourcing - some operators will come back (in) to run the private infrastructures!
Nokia 9000 - has voice, SMS, FAX, data, e-mail, vt100 terminal emulation, and
a built-in web browser!

Siemens 1054 and 1054isdn DECT base station - provides a home cordless exchange
- next generation devices will probably also include data support
