Abstract

There is a clear trend toward unification of communication traffic and infrastructures, but what possible paths can we take to get there. This talk explores one potential path, that could be used to support mobile users in the near future. It uses examples of straight forward extensions to existing products to indicate potential new products and to show that the changes required to achieve the projected future are not that unreasonable.

To be wildly successful, mobile computing and communication systems should subsume the current services provided by the wired infrastructure. This will both provide great benefits to users (as they will have the services, but not be tied to fixed locations) and it will allow the fixed infrastructure to be used as the new mobile infrastructure. A similar subsumption of current broadcast radio, television, and some location services will allow the reuse of their spectrum for communication with mobile users.
