My research concerns development of computational methods for solving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) on evolving domains. Such PDEs occur in multiphase flow simulations where the moving domains are interfaces separating immiscible fluids or domains that have the interfaces as boundaries. These interfaces may undergo strong deformations and topological changes such as drop-breakup or coalecence may occur. We develop finite element methods where the dynamic geometry is allowed to cut through the fixed background mesh in an arbitrary fashion without loosing accuracy and without problems with ill-conditioned linear systems. We refer to these methods as Cut Finite Element Methods (CutFEM).
