TELEINFORMATIK/CCSlab: Plan för verksamhetsåret 1998

Goals and Activities 1998

General

The Computer Communication Systems lab is concerned with computer based communication in the broadest possible sense. We are concerned with:

Undergraduate education

The CCSlab is heavily involved in undergraduate education especially in the Internetworking course (2G1305) and in the Mobile Computing and Communication module of the finger course (2G1302).

Prof. Maguire is involed as a mentor for EIT students and has been very active in advising and examining exjobbs.

Graduate education and research

The lab will offer two regular graduate courses, with one as part of the ten point teleinformatics graduate course. The lab offers individualized reading courses. Most of the graduate education activities (and the M.Sc. exjobbs) are carried out in research projects.

The lab also is involved in a number of interdisciplinary projects which involve research in multiple areas and provides material for education of the participants in such projects as necessary for the work of those involved. Prof. Maguire has been and expects to continue to be a frequent participant in graduate thesis proposal committees, grading committees, secondary advisor, ... and an occasional opponent.

Industrial and academic projects

The goal of all of these projects is to:

  1. help make industry successful over the long term (so that they can in turn provide sustained support for the lab),
  2. promote information transfer in both directions between the lab and industry, and
  3. serve as a basis for join research and educational activities.

Projekt I1: cooperative research with ERA

One exjobb related to disconnect/reconnect of PPP.

Projekt I2: cooperative research with Telia/Ericsson via Ellemtel

Three doctoral students will conduct their graduate studies as the focus of their work at Ellemtel.

Projekt I3: cooperative research with HP & University of Wollongong

Continued work with Dr. M. T. Smith on mobile base stations. In addition, there will be a follow on project to the Smart Badge work done jointly with Dr. H. W. Peter Beadle or The Institute for Telecommunications Research, Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Wollongong.

Projekt I4: cooperative research with Mitre

One student from Mitre is expected to begin his doctoral studies in 1998 in the area of software radios and computer communications.

Others

Cooperative projects are being discussed with several additional commercial firms in the area of computer communications.

Graduate Advising

Professor Maguire is also involved as an main or secondary advisor to students in PCC, especially in Track 2: Wireless Infrastructure (4GW) projects and Track 3: Services and User Behavior with specific responsibility for students working on WP1 Functionality and design of mobile terminal artefacts for details see the working pages.

An additional PCC track in internetworking will be proposed in early 1998.

EU projects

Projekt 1: OnTheMove

For a description of goals and activities for OnTheMove see http://www.sics.se/~onthemove/

A licentiate thesis in the area of "Information flow analysis in communicating processes" is expect from this project as well as two licentiate theses in the area of "performance analysis of mobile data protocols in the context of mobile LAN/WAN internetworking".

Projekt 2: Media

For a descrition of goals and activities for Media see http://www.esd.kth.se/Media.

A licentiate thesis in the area of "architectures and implementations for low cost basestations" is expect in the spring.

Continuing education

The lab has provided continuing education or other undergraduate lectures for the department (with a networking module for the Sysadm course) and for DSV. It is anticipated that such courses will continue to occur, however they have low priority for human resources within the lab.

Working Environment/Arbetsmiljö

Continue to explore flex-working and move towards fully distributed working.

Equal opportunity/Jämställdhetsinsatser

Accept students with competence or potential competence (subject to funds and advising capacity) to complete a civ. ing., a licentiate, or doctoral degree; and help them to be the best that they can be irrespective or their sex, origins, etc.

Internationalization/Internationalisering

The lab is involved in many projects which have international scope, we expect to continue such interactions when mutually beneficial.

Staffing/Bemanning

Current Staffing and new recuiting needs/Nuvarande bemanning och ev nyrekryteringsbehov.

Currently the laboratory has one professor (G.Q. Maguire Jr.) and three full-time doctoral students (C. Wettergren, J-T Liu), along with a full-time licentiate student (Anna Rehn), part-time doctoral students (Roch Glitho, Joe Mitola III, Theo Kanter, and Claes Frisk) and part-time licentiate students (Y. Ismailov, Waseem Besada, Ingvar Fröroth, and Henrik Gustafsson). In addition, there will be a number of students doing their exjobbs in the CCSlab.

Waseem Besada will become an instructor at Ingenjörskolan in Kista as of January 1998.

There are plans for additional staff in conjunction with TSlab.

Development of Personnel/Personalutveckling

Prof. Maguire hopes to spend approximate one month per year visiting in a industrial research laboratory.

Equipment/Utrustning

As costs for wireless connectivity at high speed fall, the lab will explore moving to wireless LANs and increase its use of wireless communications. Major expenditures are for computers, networking, and user interface equipment. The lab will also explore using rapid prototyping equipment.

Space/Lokaler

As indicated in previous years, one goal of the lab is to end its physical presence and move to a completely distributed working arrangement.

Note: In the dept. board meeting of 1998-01-16 they vote (see IS-PROTOKOLL Nr 1-98) as follows - that this point would be "eliminated".

"Styrelsen fastställde föreliggande verksamhetsplaner från labben med följande undantag: Punkt 6 Lokaler i CCSlabs plan strykes helt. Övriga planer fastställs av styrelsen per capsulam."

Followup/Uppföljning and Quality control/Kvalitetsstyrning

The EU projects are subject to regular external evaluations (which OnTheMove passed in spring 1996 and 1997; Media was positively reviewed in December 1997).
