TELEINFORMATIK/CCSlab: 3 year Plan för verksamhetsåret 1997-1999

Goals and Activities 1997-1999

General

The Computer Communication Systems lab is concerned with computer based communication in the broadest possible sense. We are concerned with:

The general focus of the next three years is to explore the effects of and cause the development of low cost basestations - which can provide the multiple users with high speed (greater that 2 Mbits/s) connectivity. Given such base stations we will also explore how to utlize information about the users' location to help provide new services and improve the way the network provides connectivity. Additionally, we will continue to explore the effects on the mobile network of the merge of media and communications via projects targeted at voice, images, and video.

Undergraduate education

The CCSlab expects to remain heavily involved in undergraduate education especially the Telesys course (2G1307) and in the Mobile Computing and Communication module of the finger course (2G1302). The expects to take over the undergraduate Internetworking course as it falls in the specific domain of the laboratory. With the expection that one of the new universitetslektors in telecommunications would choose to be affiliated with the lab.

The lab expects to remain active advising exjobbs and the professor expects to personally decrease the number of exjobb examined to a more sustainable level of less than 20 per year, rather than the previous more than 30 per year. This later expectation is based on the planned increase of faculty within the department.

The lab offers and will continue to offer individualized instruction to exceptional undergraduates.

Prof. Maguire will continue as a mentor for EIT students.

Graduate education and research

The lab currently offers no regular graduate courses, but will offer courses (notably a graduate Internetworking course) when there exist more teaching resources within the communications area in the department. The lab does offer individualized reading courses and will continue to do son. Most of the graduate education activities (and the M.Sc. exjobbs) will be carried out in research projects.

The lab also is involved in a number of interdisciplinary projects which involve research in multiple areas and provides material for education of the participants in such projects as necessary for the work of those involved. Prof. Maguire expects to continue to be a frequent participant in graduate thesis proposal committees, grading committees, secondary advisor, ... and an occasional opponent.

Projekt 1: OnTheMove

Beskrivning av mål och aktiviteter för OnTheMove.

The basic goal of OnTheMove is to provide services via existing networks (suchas GSM, mobitex, ...).

A doctoral dissertation in the area of "Information flow analysis in communicating processes" is expect from this project. In addition, a number of licentiate and exjobb reports are expected in the area of "mobile data protocol performance in the context of mobile LAN/WAN internetworking".

Projekt 2: Media

Beskrivning av mål och aktiviteter för Media.

The basic goal of Media is to design a new infrastructure for wireless communication via low cost basestations.

A doctoral dissertation in the area of "architectures and implementations for low cost basestations" is expect from this project as well as several exjobb reports.

Industrial and academic projects

The goal of all of these projects is to:

  1. help make industry successful over the long term (so that they can in turn provide sustained support for the lab),
  2. promote information transfer in both directions between the lab and industry, and
  3. serve as a basis for join research and educational activities.

Projekt I1: cooperative research with ERA

Most subprojects will be associated with Mobile-IP, i.e., how to provide data services over GSM, DCS, PCS, UMTS, ... FLMTS.

Projekt I2: cooperative research with Telia/Ellemtel

The major thrust of the next three years will be new telecommunication services on top of the new infrastructures which will be tested in the public networks (specifically, ADSL, VDSL, xDSL, and packet based services).

Projekt I3: cooperative research with HP

If the proposed HP Science Center in Stockholm is realized, we expect there to be considerable interaction concerning mobile computing.

Projekt I4: cooperative research with NSC

In cooperation with ESDlab we will explore and expect to help drive standards related to image and video using DECT.

Note that Ericsson and Telia are donors of the funds supporting the professorship and have previously provided project funds for work of mutual interest. It is expected that they will continue this support.

Continuing education

The lab will continue to provided continuing education and undergraduate lectures for other units of KTH.

Precollege education

In 1996, the lab had one precollege student work on a project prior to the start of their first year at the KTH. We anticipate expanding this activity in future years.

Working Environment/Arbetsmiljö

Continue to explore flex-working and move towards fully distributed working.

Equal opportunity/Jämställdhetsinsatser

Accept students with competence or potential competence (subject to funds and advising capacity) to complete a civ. ing., a licentiate, or doctoral degree; and help them to be the best that they can be irrespective or their sex, origins, etc.

Internationalization/Internationalisering

The lab is involved in many projects which have international scope, we expect to continue to explore such interactions when mutually beneficial.

Staffing/Bemanning

Current Staffing and new recuiting needs/Nuvarande bemanning och ev nyrekryteringsbehov.

Currently the laboratory has one professor (G.Q. Maguire Jr.) and two full-time doctoral students, along with a part-time doctoral student and a part-time licentiate student. In addition, there a number of students doing their exjobbs in the CCSlab. We anticipate a level of 4 doctoral students with a number in each stage of the pipe. A critial addition will be a second student for the Media project.

We expect continuing interacting with potential licentiate students in industry to help them formulate research plans which could lead to a licentiate proposal while they remain employed in industry. Perhaps these could lead to industrial service ("Industritjaenst"?) doctoral study.

We expect to have one or more post doctoral visitors for short periods of time working with the lab.

Development of Personnel/Personalutveckling

Prof. Maguire hopes to spend approximate one month per year visiting in a industrial research laboratory.

Equipment/Utrustning

As costs for wireless connectivity at high speed fall, the lab will move to wireless LANs and increase its use of wireless communications. Major expenditures are for computers, networking, and user interface equipment. The lab will also explore using rapid prototyping equipment (such as the LKPF PBC writer).

Space/Lokaler

As indicated in previous years, one goal of the lab is to end its physical presence and move to a completely distributed working arrangement. Hopefully this can be completed before year 2000.

Followup/Uppföljning and Quality control/Kvalitetsstyrning

The labs projects are regularily evaluated by external evaluators.
