Biosketch and research areas

On August 1, 2008, I retired from the professorship in Spatial Systems Analysis within the Division of Transport and Location Analysis in the Department of Transport and Economics (from July 1, 2010, Department of Transport Science), School of Architecture and the Built Environment, Royal Institute of Technology. I was appointed professor of Spatial Systems Analysis on May 1, 2001. Between August 1, 2000, and March 31, 2002, I was on leave, holding a foreign professorship within the Master´s Program in Environmental Sciences, University of Tsukuba, Japan. Previously, I was active in the Research Group for Urban and Regional Planning, Department of Mathematics, 1969-1989 (from 1978 as leader) and I was adjunct professor in Systems Analysis of Settlements and Transportation 1989-1992 and 1994-1997 within the Division of Regional Planning. Between 1998 and 2000 I was acting professor of Spatial Systems Analysis and head of the Division of Transport and Location Analysis. I have experience from employments in the Stockholm County Council Office of Regional Planning and Urban Transportation, 1987-1991, and in the Swedish Institute for Regional Research (previously the Expert Group on Regional and Urban Studies), 1991-1997. My main areas of research include strategic analyses of urban and regional systems, integrated analysis of land-use, transportation and the environment, infrastructure and regional development, spatial modelling and geographical information systems. I am active in national, Nordic, Baltic, European and world-wide research networks in these areas and I am the co-editor of nine internationally published books.
