The effect of crowding and comfort in public transport on travel choices: empirical prestudy

Project summary

This project focuses on crowding on-board public transport vehicles and the part of perceived comfort that depends on crowding. The project responds to the need to develop a ”Method to include congestion and comfort in public transport travel” which is pointed out in the Swedish Transport Administration's report In-depth descriptions of urgent research and innovation - For the years 2022-2027. The aim is to investigate the possibility of calibrating the effect of public transport crowding on travellers' route choices using ticket validation data and supplementary supply data. One goal of the project is to lead on to a continuation project that will focus on how the crowding effects observed in this project can be modelled in the Sampers system through appropriate development and calibration of primarily the traffic assignment for rail and public transport.
