Introduction
The objective of the project is to perform a technical but also a strategical futurological study about terminals (PDA and cellular phone) role in a multi access environment. A multi access environment is the access from a terminal through an access point (e.g. GPRS, WLAN and bluetooth) to the net (as Internet, intranet, telephone network or mobile network), where the terminal can chose between two or more access points. The assumption is a network having many different (wireless) accesses and that the user should be able to move between accesses, either keeping the session or doing the movement between sessions. The future prospective is 2-5 years.
The access points, which are expected to be in use in this approach, are wireless bearer such as GPRS, UMTS, WLAN (incl. H/2), Bluetooth etc.
Some questions of interest to be answered are:
- How to select an access method in a multi access environment? The access points, which will be examined, are UMTS, GPRS, GSM, WLAN and Bluetooth.
- Where should the logic for the access option be placed? In terminals, net or applications?
- What are the requirements of the terminal considering where the logic is placed?
- How does the Bluetooth as a link to WLAN/PGRS/UMTS works?
The questions will be illustrated from a technical point of view and they will support Telia’s business.

Method
The Master thesis project will
begin with a pre-study period where the limitation will be made and the issue
and area for deeper study will be defined.
Therefore follows a deep study that is the major part of the thesis. Contacts with other person and project are important to the input for the project.

Goal and result
This study should answer (some of) the above questions, identify new relevant question at issue and try to find technical and strategical solutions appropriate for Telia as an operator.
