Alcatraz island, or The Rock, isolated from San Francisco by the cold, and shark infested, waters of the bay, has not allways been a penetrary. First it was a sacret place for the Indians. It has also been used for military installations protecting the Bay, and after the jail closed down it became a Nature Reserve to protect its birdlife.

There is a superb self guided audio tour to walk you through the old dungeons of the State Penetrary. It tells the story of Alcatraz in the prisoners and their wards own voices. Alcatraz once held prisoners like "the Birdman", Al Capone, Machinegun Kelly etc (the Phantom, Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood :-)

The worst of the worst, and those not kept in by any other prison walls were sent here. There were some escape atempts, some bloodier than other... A movie starring Clint Eastwood used the true story of three men breaking out of Alcatraz by carving their way through the concrete cell wall. They made it down to the water and no one knows if they made it to the other shore...

The cells were not too big!

From the island you get fabulous views of the Golden Gate and...

...San Francisco.
