Introduction

Instant messaging and presence service is becoming an important application in the telecommunications industry. In April 2001 Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia established Wireless Village. This cooperation has changed the name to IMPS.

The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) introduces a set of specifications for mobile IMPS, procedures and tools for testing interoperability. These specifications provide the possibility of exchanging messages and presence information between mobile devices, mobile services, and Internet-based instant messaging services.

With Presence services users can share personal information about his or her status, (e.g., on-line, off-line, busy), location (home, work), and their moods (happy, angry).

There are a few standards that provide an open presence solution that can be adopted in mobile phones, and also enable users to send different types of messages that are delivered in real time.

In my thesis I will present a discussion and analysis of presence and instant messaging arising technologies such as the SIMPLE,IMPS standards, translation between these standards and prototyping them with JAVA. The focus will be on the differences between IMPS and SIMPLE and how to bridge these differences. .
